The Audio-First Social Network

Clubhouse became widely known in 2020 for an audio-first format centered on live rooms rather than a conventional visual feed. Instead, the platform is built entirely around 'drop-in' live audio rooms. It feels like an interactive, live podcast where anyone can raise their hand to speak.

How Rooms Work

Users browse the 'Hallway' (the main feed) to find active rooms discussing topics they care about—from startup funding and tech news to comedy roasts and music sessions. A room consists of a Stage (where the Speakers and Moderators are) and an Audience (people listening in silently). If an audience member wants to talk, they can 'raise their hand' and a moderator can invite them to the stage.

Houses and Networking

Clubhouse later introduced 'Houses', which act as private, permanent clubs for specific communities to host recurring rooms. Live voice can make professional or interest-based discussions feel more immediate, but hearing a voice does not verify identity or establish trust.

The Decline of Exclusivity

Clubhouse initially used an invitation system, but access and product emphasis have changed since its launch period. Now, it is fully open to the public. While the user base is much smaller than during its peak, the remaining community is highly dedicated.
